    Formation Evaluation Course

Integrated formation evaluation is the advance form of petrophysics where data integration plays the major role. Core data is ground truth in the industry. Though this is not the fact, only properly  “quality checked (QCed)” core data can be treated as ground truth. Core data “quality check” ( QC )starts from acquisition and planning stage. Similarly, Log data QC plays an important role in formation Evaluation.

Importance of quality check lies in the fact that as the full field model, will start from single well, any anomaly in the overall pattern needs to be understood properly. Whether the anomaly is due the data quality or geology will govern the future Geo-model.

Once QC is done, next step is to consider the core analysis and Log interpretation. More data reduces the uncertainty of the model though there should be some trade-off between value of information and data acquisition. Lot of corrections need to be made on core data as most of the core analysis are done in lab conditions which obviously defers from reservoir condition. If the objective is to create 3D static model which will further go into Dynamic modelling, it’s important to discuss with geologist and reservoir engineer. Main output from petrophysical interpretation  is porosity, permeability, and capillary pressure. Often electro facies do not suffice, especially in case of carbonates. Rock typing is required to capture the geology and propagating properties in intercell-gridding. There are many methods like Winland, Pittman, Lucia and HFU etc to link between geological rocktype and petrophysical rock type. Rock typing is essential to make successful predictive dynamic model which will take care of geological variation (sedimentology and diagenesis) and petrophysical properties.

The course will glide the attendees through  basic steps to QC the data to advance full field petrophysical interpretation. There will be discussions on effective and total porosity and factors to consider for choosing them  for reservoir modelling considering the product (3D-Dynamic model). We will also discuss how  initial water saturation should be modeled through capillary pressure data and what could be the uncertainties in the petrophysical model.

Detailed course structure will be provided  on  request. Generic structure for 5 days course is as follow:-

Day 1: Introduction to reservoir Characterization,

    Core Acquisition and Planning
